And while we’re okay, we’ve had many friends and family who are going through a really hard time.
There’s only so much we can do to help while still protecting our family.
So, our kids have been making spiritual bouquets while my husband and I add our prayers, gift cards, and frozen meals to be dropped off on the porch with a promised phone or Zoom call to follow.
In this short post, you’ll learn what a spiritual bouquet is, as well as how to present the idea to your kids. Don’t forget to download a free printable to get your family started.
how your family can make a meaningful spiritual bouquet
A spiritual bouquet is a collection of prayers, intercessions and sacrifices your family makes on behalf of your loved one.
For example, my best friend had a birthday last month, but we couldn’t visit her, and she’s the type that would appreciate prayers more than the birthday gift.
So, I printed off the page below of the vase and sat my kids down to explain what our gift would be this year.
Each time they pray or make an act of love, intentionally and specifically for that loved one, they get to draw a petal onto a flower. Each act of love slowly fills up the page in a beautifully visually way.
When the page is full of flowers, your loved one will see proof of all the prayers and love they’ve received.
benefits of a spiritual bouquet for your kids
Your kids will be able to see the effects of their prayer in a more visually concrete way. It gets them excited to do more!
I overheard my kids saying to each other, “we need more prayers, there’s too much space on this side.” It made my heart smile to see them take initiative for their prayer intentions.

This spiritual bouquet is a wonderful opportunity to explain to your kids how deep and wide prayer intercession can be. It’s not limited to words. Prayer involves the whole self: words, hearts, and actions.

However, to name a few ideas, have your kids try these:
- Giving up dessert, ketchup, or another favourite add-on for the day (gasp! yes, and they’ll survive too!)
- Skipping a tv show to ask Jesus for their loved one’s intentions
- Colouring pages with Scripture verses they can pray
- Doing homework or chores without complaining (and giving their best effort)
- Eating their less-favourite food at a mealtime
- Fasting from teasing or sarcasm
- Singing or dancing to some praise & worship tunes
A spiritual bouquet is a beautiful, concrete way to teach kids about active prayer that is powerful…how they can make a difference, no matter how young they may be. As well, this can be used for any birthday, holiday, Advent or Lent activity, and especially as a pick-me-up for a loved one who needs the prayers. It will be a blessing to your family.
